For the privateer in the mid-1970s who wanted to go sports car racing (and, in particular, one who wanted to compete successfully at the famed 24 Hours Le Mans race), there was really only one viable option, the Porsche RSR. Introduced in 1973, the RSR was a factory-built racing car based on the 911 chassis. These were not converted road cars, rather purpose-built competition models designed and built from the ground up for serious racing use. In 1974, the factory made significant changes to the car including fitting a new 3.0 litre engine, wider wheels with centre lock hubs and improved aerodynamics. The result was a car that would dominate the GT category and challenge for overall wins around the world.
The iconic Rennsport Porsche 911's are being built to bespoke specification in the heart of the Cotswolds, a continuation of over 25 years working on air-cooled 911s. Engineered by some of the most experienced Porsche technicians in the country, in a state-of-the-art building that creates the perfect working environment, it ensures a stunning final appearance and superb quality from start to finish.
This example is a rebuild of a 1985 original 930 a 3.3 litre, intercooled turbo. This 930 turbo RSR was originally a dry-use only, Gulf State lefthand drive with a great history, converted into a 1973 Carrera 2.8 RSR specification, with a fully galvanized body-shell.
Completed in 2017 after a full body restoration by Rennsport, C58 XLY is finished in stunning classic Ivory, with Mexico blue decals and Fuchs 15″alloy wheels (9" front and 10" rear). The sunroof has been restored to full working condition and brand new lights were fitted, front and rear, with chrome surrounds and metal chrome horn grills. The door handles were stripped and triple chrome-plated and front and rear screens replaced with the correct polished inserts. To complete the finish, the door frames and window trims were polished to match, along with genuine Porsche chrome flag mirrors. The underside of the car is in the same condition as the top, being correctly anti-stone-chipped and sprayed in the body colour. The interior has been tastefully backdated with the correct ‘salt n pepper’ lightweight Perlon carpet set complemented by brand new period blue tartan RS touring seats. The car also features factory fitted air conditioning and correct lightweight RS specification door cards with electric windows.
After being showcased by Rennsport to demonstrate their bespoke build and restoration talents, this example and its sister car, a 1979 930 Turbo Rennsport RSR, were offered for sale in late 2017; both cars were snapped up immediately but due to the purchaser’s circumstances changing, we are delighted to have been given the opportunity to bring C58 XLY to the market today.
The quality of the build and finish is as staggering as the ferocious performance producing an estimated 380 bhp and sounding every bit as good as she looks - all this in a car that weighs just circa 1,250 kg compared to a modern day Porsche 911 at 1,745 kg.
